Story Archives: Anonymous Smear Campaign- "When The Good Old Boys Call The Shots"

Anonymous Smear Campaign- "When The Good Old Boys Call The Shots"
by Drew Pierson - Shreveport Times (excerpt)

Local Lawyer Subject Of Anonymous Smear Campaign

During the last six months, Bossier Parish Attorney Patrick Jackson has seen anonymous letters sent to his children's school, his church, relatives and clients accusing him of drawing retirement benefits from multiple public agencies, double-billing municipalities for travel and funneling thousands in government contracts toward a private client — all of which is false.

"I am disgusted with the fact — and you can quote me on this — that these cowardly accusations without a name are being sent to my grandchildren at school," said Jackson's father, Richey Jackson.

Patrick Jackson declined comment for most of this article, saying he did not want to encourage the letter writers. However, Richey Jackson, director of the Bossier-Webster Parish Truancy Assessment and Service Center, said he was outraged that his family had to endure the attacks.

The Jacksons say they don't know for sure who is sending the letters. The Times also has received several letters.

Local political observers say Jackson has drawn the ire of certain Bossier politicians because of his involvement in a district judge race last year.

"About all I can assure you is that when the good old boys who call the shots — it doesn't matter if the good old boys are Democrats or Republicans — this is the kind of internecine, political warfare you see when one of them suddenly lose," said Elliot Stoncipher, a political analyst and demographer with Evets Management Services. "And nobody is worried about damage it does to the parish."
