Story Archives: Senate Hopefuls Discuss Religion

Senate Hopefuls Discuss Religion
by MARK BALLARD - Advocate (excerpt)

Lawyer Dan Claitor and businessman Lee Domingue described themselves as Christians but said, if elected, they would represent people of all religions even if it put them at odds with conservative Christian groups. The third candidate in the race, Laurinda Calongne, had scheduled another campaign event and was unable to attend.

Claitor said he and his family practices their religion quietly. “That is part of who I am and it does influence decisions I make all the time,” Claitor said. “But it doesn’t mean I am a slave to the Catholic church. ... I have a clear understanding of the distinction between church and state and the quagmires that you can end up in when you mix the two.”

Domingue, who has written evangelical Christian books, said that religion would influence his decisions but that he would not allow religious groups to dictate political positions to him.

Picture: Domingue with the head of the Louisiana Family Forum at his announcement. We must remember that Domingue is the guy who went by the name 'Winston' while living in Texas just a few years ago & now he goes by 'Lee'.

In the article Domingue (a fundamentalist) said, “Everybody should have a right to adopt a child, as long as they are qualified and they are vetted properly.”

Doesn't that mean he supports gay adoptions? Talk about trying to be all things to all people!
