Tax breaks for Louisiana residents are included in proposed legislation filed Monday for possible consideration in the 2009 legislative session that opens April 27. Monday marked the beginning of Louisiana House pre-filing.
Among the proposals submitted are those that would give taxpayers an income tax deduction for sales taxes they pay in Louisiana; increase the children’s education income tax credit; and provide an income tax credit on premiums paid for health and accident insurance policies.
The proposals by Republican and Democratic lawmakers come at a time when Louisiana’s revenues are declining and federal economic recovery proposals are pending that could bring in new state dollars. “They are talking about all kinds of stimulus packages now,” said state Rep. Henry Burns, R-Haughton, sponsor of the sales-tax-break legislation.
