Sen. Donald Cravins Jr., D-Opelousas, who is leaving the Legislature and being replaced as chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee, might have felt nudged out a little prematurely when he oversaw his final meeting Monday.

When he walked into the meeting room, his nameplate was not at his desk in the chairman's seat. Instead, the nameplate of Sen. Troy Hebert, D-Jeanerette, the new chairman, was in front of the chair. "I guess transitions happen fast around here," Cravins joked as he gaveled the meeting to order.

Cravins resigned to become chief staffer to the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, whose chairwoman is U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.
