Story Archives: U.S. Attorney Jim Letten isn't going anywhere just yet

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten isn't going anywhere just yet
Times-Picayune (excerpt)

The email, sent by the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of President-Elect Barack Obama's transition team, was sent to all sitting U.S. Attorneys, Letten said. "We've been requested to hold over," he said.

The email also went out to all U.S. Marshals, Letten said.

Letten, who was previously a career federal prosecutor before his appointment as U.S. Attorney by President George Bush, has declined to address his chances of remaining in his job.

The appointment of the top federal prosecutor is made by the president after suggestions from a state's elected leaders, particularly those from the same party. U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, the senior Democrat in Louisiana, has said she supports Letten, but will come up with her recommendation in consultation with community leaders.
