The Board of Regents has identified 93 low-completer programs at universities, including five at LSUS, six at Grambling, 11 at Louisiana Tech, four at Northwestern and nine at Southern University in Shreveport. Among the state's Community and Technical College system institutions, the Regents identified 565 low-completer programs, including five at Bossier Parish Community College.

As the conversation about each continues, let's keep in mind that eliminating low-completer programs on the books today will have little or no financial impact in the current fiscal year and will have limited impact on next year's, since students who have begun programs will be given time to finish them.

Louisiana's colleges and universities have too often been asked to bear much of the brunt of state budget cuts. Their leadership is once again stepping up to the plate and scrutinizing where dollars can be saved during this especially trying time of worldwide economic recession. Concentrating scarce resources on the best programs has always been imperative. Deciding which ones are best is the difficult challenge ahead.
