Story Archives: EDITORIAL: Study Amendments Carefully

EDITORIAL: Study Amendments Carefully
The Daily Advertiser (excerpt)

Today, we begin a discussion of the proposed constitutional amendments that will be on the Tuesday ballot.

We have offered our endorsements in races for the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Because we maintain contact with members of the Louisiana congressional delegation and with people campaigning to become members, we feel qualified to make such recommendations.

We will make no endorsement in the race for president. That should come from people in the media who cover the Washington scene regularly. Our journalists concentrate on local and state coverage. To keep our readers abreast of news from the White House, we rely on wire services, syndicated columnists and other sources separate from our staff. We attempt to provide sufficient information for decision-making in the presidential race through news stories and national columnists.

When you go to the polls, you will face seven proposed amendments to the state constitution. None of them are of extreme importance or urgency, and none seem to inspire controversy. However, it is important that you study them carefully and cast an informed vote. Some should probably have been enacted as laws instead of embedded in the Constitution. Nonetheless, they have been placed before us as voters, and we are obligated to express our views.
