NEW ORLEANS — Two state appellate judges are locked in a heated runoff election that on Tuesday will fill the district seat being vacated by retiring Chief Justice Pascal Calogero of the Louisiana Supreme Court.
Both Judge James “Jimmy” Kuhn of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal and Judge Greg Guidry of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeal are Republican conservatives who vow to strictly interpret the laws in each case, if elected to the state’s highest court. The duties of the seven justices include hearing lawyer misconduct cases — and effective Dec. 1 — reining in misleading and deceptive attorney advertising that gives the legal profession a bad reputation.
Ironically, both Kuhn, of Ponchatoula, and Guidry, of Nine Mile Point in Jefferson Parish, have been the target of colorful attack ads, launched by third-parties that purport to support one candidate over the other.
