For their next D.A., voters are fortunate to have two competent, articulate men of law from which to choose — one a state district judge for 26 years, the other a lawyer with a successful practice in criminal and civil law.

Because voters don't get to split their vote, The Times tilts in favor of day-to-day experience inside Caddo District Court, recommending Judge Charles Rex Scott.

Understanding the need to prevent young offenders from becoming adult criminals, Scott wants to expand a current program aimed at showing youth the graphic reality of crime and drug abuse. Scott is well-versed on the challenges confronting juvenile court and has pledged to support recent recommendations to provide more resources for mental health evaluations for adjudicated teens. And he has talked about a truancy intervention program to keep students in school.
