4TH DISTRICT: Doc Fleming's Immigrant Busing Service

OLD RIVER ROAD BLOG

We often hear politicians talk about ways to increase border security and stop the flood of illegal immigrants, so it's more than a little surprising to hear a politician advocate a transportation system to bus them into the United States. But that's exactly what 4th District GOP candidate John Fleming did at a forum last month.

I asked Dr. Fleming about his unusual view, and he assured me, "I stand behind that idea 100 percent." Said Fleming, "We need these people and they need the jobs. We just don't want them to stay unless they 'go to the back of the line' when it comes to permanent immigration."

Let's think about this for a minute. Fleming wants to create a transportation system to bus migrant workers into the United States. How do we effectively screen these immigrants? How do we know we aren't transporting a terrorist into the country? And how do we keep track of them once they're here and make sure they return home?

And who's going to pay for the massive bureaucracy that will be needed to oversee this program? Fleming told me, "This would be for business and paid by business." But would it? Which business would pay for this? Just one or a collection of businesses along the border? And they're supposed to create this transportation system and ensure no terrorists or criminals are just along for a free ride?

Imagine the massive logistics involved with something like this. Most certainly the taxpayers would end up shouldering the costs. Perhaps taxpayer dollars should be spent to stop illegal immigrants, not bus them in?

Dr Fleming on Immigration: not enough illegals?! (:40)
