LA Ethics 1 has focused a powerful spotlight on governmental ethics

LA Ethics 1 is a coalition of more than three dozen statewide, regional and local organizations committed to improving enforcement of ethics laws and positioning Louisiana as a state known for honest, transparent and accountable government. The coalition seeks to do the will of the people. According to a recent poll, 96 percent of citizens responding said they strongly support initiatives to improve Louisiana's governmental ethics laws.

Recent events, however, raise a troubling question: Do legislators want to improve ethics laws?

Last week the Governmental Affairs Committee of the state House of Representatives showed little enthusiasm for good-government proposals by LA Ethics 1, intended to improve the state's reputation by updating ethics laws.

One of the bills would require lawmakers and candidates for seats in the Legislature to disclose all sources of income and debts and financial interests. It was as though the committee members didn't see the bill. They took no action at all, apparently hoping if they ignored the measure, it would go away.

While there were disappointments, opportunities still exist to promote the total package. LA Ethics 1 has focused a powerful spotlight on governmental ethics, and there is no doubt that good will come from it. The benefits can be increased greatly with widespread public support.
