Story Archives: Saturday Winners Take Seats In House

Saturday Winners Take Seats In House
by Bruce Alpert - Times-Picayune (excerpt)

Democrat Don Cazayoux was sworn in Tuesday after winning Saturday's election against Republican Woody Jenkins to take the seat vacated by Republican Rep. Richard Baker in the 6th Congressional District.

Republican Steve Scalise, who easily beat Democrat Gilda Reed in the 1st Congressional District, will be sworn in today...

He said he is attending a morning White House meeting today with President Bush and other GOP members of Congress before he is sworn in, and he hopes to talk to members of the delegation about priorities.

"For the last several years, Charlie Melancon (D-Napoleonville) and I have met in a phone booth over here as the total Democratic caucus from Louisiana," said Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, in introducing Cazayoux to Pelosi and the rest of the House. "Now, Madam Speaker, we may need different accommodations because of this election."
