Legislators are on pace to receive a minimum of $38,000 in compensation in 2008. Rank-and-file House and Senate members’ base pay is $16,800.
But they get an extra $143 per diem for every day they are in session and a $6,000 annual “unvouchered” expense allowance which for tax purposes is counted as compensation.
This year, the per diem is adding up — 111 days per state representative and 109 days per senator.
