Internet is ideal for mudslinging

Can anything be done to keep politicians within the bounds of honesty and decency when they are campaigning on the Web?

There are many nonprofit organizations dedicated to good government. They have often helped us understand the issues in election campaigns. Perhaps it is time that they use their resources to separate truth from fiction in Internet campaigns and inform the voters when candidates build their campaigns on fiction. Such a service could grow steadily in importance as the use of the Web for political messages continues to grow.

It will only be of value, however, if voters respond properly to the revelations such an organization makes. If we learn a candidate is lying and reject his bid for office, that will strengthen the values that are so important, but so often on shaky grounds.

The alternative could be an unrestricted, unethical and dangerous political era on the World Wide Web.
