Board of Elementary and Secondary Education member Chas Roemer said he will talk with lawmakers this week about the addition of performance standards to Education Superintendent Paul Pastorek’s employment contract.
Roemer sought the standards as BESE approved a $355,600 compensation package for Pastorek that includes an annual 6 percent built-in escalation clause. BESE rejected the move and approved the Pastorek contract. Roemer cast the lone no vote.
Now, the Legislature’s top money panel is having problems with the pact’s lack of any standards by which Pastorek’s performance may be judged. It refused to go along last week with the contract, sending BESE back to the drawing board.
COMMENTARY: Roemer gave the graduation speech for his class at Harvard. He may know something about education.
