Story Archives: Vitter Avoids Talking About Escort For Now

Vitter Avoids Talking About Escort For Now
by Bruce Alpert and Bill Walsh - Times-Picayune (excerpt)

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., avoided having to testify last week in a hearing related to the "D.C. Madam" case, but he might not be out of the woods yet.

Montgomery Sibley, the attorney for Deborah Jeane Palfrey, said he still plans to call Vitter as a defense witness when the criminal case goes to trial next year. Vitter, whose phone number showed up in records of Palfrey's escort service between 1999 and 2001, was subpoenaed to testify at a hearing related to the prostitution case against Palfrey.

The judge canceled the hearing, which was to focus on whether a former escort and government witness, Paula Neble, had broken a contract with Palfrey stipulating that the escort not to do anything illegal with clients.

Sibley said in court papers that phone records suggest Neble served an escort for Vitter on three occasions.
