Story Archives: Aaron Broussard wants leak of his fraud indictment investigated

Aaron Broussard wants leak of his fraud indictment investigated
by Richard Rainey - Times-Picayune (excerpt)

Former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard called Monday for an investigation into news leaks that predicted his Dec. 2 federal indictment for payroll fraud. In a motion in U.S. District Court, Broussard alleged that someone had violated the secrecy of the federal grand jury that leveled 33 charges each against him, his ex-wife, Karen Parker, and former parish attorney Tom Wilkinson. Two television stations, WWL and WVUE, produced stories Dec. 1 using anonymous sources suggesting indictments would come -- as they did -- the next day. "In this particular case, on the face of the facts, it appears that someone with intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the grand jury proceedings may have unlawfully violated (the secrecy rule) by divulging or 'leaking' the grand jury's findings a full day before the indictments were handed down," Broussard wrote. (Read Broussard's motion.) "We do not leak," U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said Monday, adding that federal prosecutors were preparing a response to Broussard's motion.
