Story Archives: Higher ed study board filled

Higher ed study board filled
by Jordan Blum - Advocate (excerpt)

A new, 18-member commission to study the future structure of higher education in the state is scheduled to start meeting Aug. 19. The Louisiana Board of Regents filled out the appointments to the Commission to Study Government, Management and Supervision of Public Postsecondary Education on Wednesday. A day earlier, Gov. Bobby Jindal named his five appointees.

“This is a robust group of leaders from across the state, and the Board of Regents is very pleased with the commission’s composition,” state Commissioner of Higher Education Jim Purcell said in a prepared statement. Purcell stated the goal is to bring in “national, regional and state research as well as testimony from experts to assist them both in analyzing our governance structure and in forming the best recommendations to strengthen Louisiana’s higher education system.”

During the last legislative session, Jindal and House Speaker Jim Tucker, R-Terrytown, proposed eliminating all the higher education boards and forming a single super board, along with new advisory boards for individual campuses. But that legislation was defeated on the House floor.
