Rep. Roy opts for family time over running for re-election

Rep. Chris Roy Jr. announced Tuesday that he would not seek a second term in the state House, mainly because he wanted to spend more time -- Little League baseball time -- with his youngest son, but also because he grew tired of the "totally partisan" battles in the Legislature.

The decision leaves one announced candidate for the District 25 seat -- retired Marine Corps Col. Barett Byrd -- who has the backing of the well-financed state Republican Party. Byrd, who lives in Woodworth, announced his candidacy last week. Qualifying is Sept. 6-8. The election is Oct. 22.

Roy, a Democrat from Alexandria, said the main reason he's getting out is because of his youngest child, John, who plays Little League baseball in the spring when the Legislature is in session. Roy's two older children are in college.
