Story Archives: STELLY WEIGHS IN ON UPCOMING ELECTION

STELLY WEIGHS IN ON UPCOMING ELECTION
by VICTORIA HARTLEY ELLENDER (excerpt)

SOUTHWEST DAILY NEWS

Longtime La. Legislator Vic Stelly said he is an expert on everything.

"Well almost everything," he said. "I am retired. All retirees are experts. That's who we are."

Stelly was the guest speaker at Wednesday's Sulphur Rotary Club meeting where he weighed in on issues comprising the gubernatorial election, taxes and term limits.

In Louisiana, Stelly said there are three ways citizens pay for government, property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes.

He reminded Rotarians of a few unknown facts about Louisiana. For example, he said Louisiana ranks five in the United States in sales taxes. Stelly attributes the high tax to the fact that we have both state and local sales taxes.

Stelly reminded Rotarians that Louisiana is ranked 46 for its property taxes.

"In Louisiana there is no state property taxes," he explained. "There are only local ones."

Stelly said Louisiana is ranked 38th for its state income taxes. He explained that there are no local income taxes in Louisiana.

Also, Stelly pointed out there are currently no inheritance taxes and no inventory taxes in Louisiana.

Stelly asked Rotarians to consider these facts when making decisions in State politics. "Ask yourself: What exactly do you want the State government to do for you," he said. "And, how do you propose that the government pay for it."
