Individually, each took his turn to put Louisiana in the worst possible light. Together, they made the state a bizarre laughingstock. Even people who weren't around during the 1991 campaign for governor know stories about Edwards and his bumper stickers: "Vote for the Crook. It's Important" and "Vote for the Lizard, not the Wizard."

Welcome to Louisiana -- which is what the national media will be saying as they review the news this week.

That's OK. Times change, and sometime even people change.
Unless Edwards is pardoned by the governor, he can't hold public office for at least 15 years after the completion of his full sentence -- and then only if he has stayed out of trouble. He can advise and endorse candidates, however, and you can bet that the 83-year-old populist will try to influence some elections.
