Louisiana's legislative session wrapped up last week with a $25 billion budget that managed to close a more than $ 1 billion gap. The House and Senate came together to pass a budget in time for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
Legislators refused a bid on selling prisons and managed to stave of, at least for this time, drastic cuts to higher education and health care. Voters will get to decide in the fall on renewing a tax for the state's TOPS scholarship program and whether it will have permanent funding.
