Jindal steps back from insistence on selling 3 state prisons

Facing bipartisan opposition, Gov. Bobby Jindal indicated Tuesday that he might be willing to sacrifice his plans to sell state prisons if additional revenue materializes in the next few weeks. The governor said he will ask the Legislature to delay consideration of a bill to sell state-owned prisons in Winn, Allen and Avoyelles parishes until the Revenue Estimating Conference meets next month to update the state's official budget forecast. If the panel recognizes additional tax revenue, Jindal said, the money could be plugged into the health care budget. "We want the legislators to have a better understanding of what revenues will be available to the state for the upcoming fiscal year," Jindal said. "If the legislators decide to use some of those (new) dollars to help replace the dollars that we propose to be used for health care, that's certainly acceptable to us."
