Chas Roemer, of Baton Rouge, a member of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, occupies one of eight districts that lawmakers are about to redraw in a special session on redistricting.

But Roemer said someone besides politicians, with input from board members, should come up with the new lines.

“If we spent half the time solving our state’s problems as we have spent drawing these lines for political purposes, our state would be better off,” he said. “It is unseemly,” Roemer said. “It is an unfortunate part of our process, quite frankly.”
