FBI agent: Tracy Belt got 'mad money' from pay-phone company

An FBI agent who investigated Bill Belt and his wife testified Friday that Belt's wife, Tracy, received cash from checks she deposited for Cajun Callers, money she told the agent she gave to Michael Johnson for his extramarital affairs. Tracy Belt told FBI Special Agent Randy Deaton that she called the cash "mad money."

The government suggested Friday that the cash was one way the Belts received income secretly from Cajun Callers, a pay-phone company that made many hundreds of thousands of dollars through Avoyelles
inmates' collect calls. Tracy Belt's attorney, Mike Davis, suggested otherwise. Davis noted that Johnson, who along with his wife Rae was the official owner of Cajun Callers, was not a frugal man.

"The man could go through some cash, could he not?" Davis said. Deaton spent all day on the witness stand Friday, the fifth day of the conspiracy and mail fraud trial of Tracy and Bill Belt, who was the Avoyelles Parish sheriff from 1980 until 2008. Bill Belt, 60, and Tracy Belt, 41, both are on trial for alleged crimes tied to Cajun Callers.
