Alexandria voters show confidence by re-electing mayor
by Bret H. McCormick - The Town Talk (excerpt)

Alexandria voters gave Mayor Jacques Roy a vote of confidence on Saturday, but that was not the case for two multiterm city councilmen. Roy was re-elected on Saturday by a comfortable margin over four challengers. He won a second term as mayor of Central Louisiana's largest city, securing 6,934 votes, or 62 percent of the more than 11,000 votes cast in Saturday's primary election.

Roy had little trouble avoiding a runoff, as he received nearly three times as many votes as his nearest competitor, City Council President Roosevelt Johnson, who finished with 21 percent of the votes (2,392 votes). Johnson finished more than 500 votes ahead of the remaining three candidates' combined totals. Von Jennings finished third with 836 votes (8 percent), followed by Joseph W. Franklin with 827 votes (7 percent) and Jay S. Johnson with 137 votes (1 percent).

"I feel that the people have made some clear messaging to the folks about what they want to see happen," Roy said Saturday night following his victory. "I think they confirmed what has been happening and would like to see that continue. ... I just want to keep moving the city forward. I think the people have spoken clearly about that and what they expect to see in relationship with the council."
