An independent poll released today shows Jeff Landry well ahead of Hunt Downer heading into Saturday's Republican runoff for the 3rd District Congressional seat. The automated telephone survey by ElectPoll shows Landry ahead 66-34 percent. The poll was conducted Sept. 27-28. The margin of error is +/- 4.21 percent. Respondents were registered Republicans who had voted in two of the last three primary elections (not including 2010). The winner of the runoff will advance to the Nov. 2 general election to take on Democrat Ravi Sangisetty to fill the seat left vacant when Democratic Rep. Charlie Melancon decided to challenge Republican Sen. David Vitter. Landry fell less than 200 votes shy of winning the nomination in the Aug. 28 first primary. Landry's vote totals included victories in 12 of the district's 13 parishes. Downer won only his home parish of Terrebonne.
