Abortion clinics, state face off in court over new law

Bossier City Medical Suite is among five abortion clinics challenging a new state law that expands state officials' powers to shut down clinics.

Louisiana and 10 other states have passed abortion-related laws this year that cover everything from ultrasounds and counseling for women seeking an abortion to whether state funds can be used to pay for an abortion. A court challenge is pending against one of Oklahoma's new laws. The federal lawsuit filed last week against the Louisiana Health and Hospitals Department over its expanded authority is the most recent challenge.

State officials are reviewing the federal lawsuit, which alleges the new law is unconstitutional and sets the stage for arbitrary enforcement.
