BRCC chief Myrtle "E.B." Dorsey lobbies for DREAM Act
Advocate (excerpt)

WASHINGTON — The president of Baton Rouge Community College joined the federal education secretary on Tuesday in calling for passage of a federal law that would create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrant children. The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, also known as the DREAM Act, would allow illegal immigrants younger than 35 to apply for conditional residency. The measure would grant conditional status, or green cards, to illegal immigrants who came to the United States before they were 16, lived in the U.S. for the past five years and obtained a U.S. high school diploma or general educational development certificate, or GED. They could then receive permanent residency if they finish two years of college or serve in the military.

Baton Rouge Community College President Myrtle Dorsey said that undocumented children are in the country as a result of their parents bringing them here. “We have the opportunity to make them viable citizens,” said Dorsey, president of the American Association of Community Colleges. “They are part of the fabric of our country.” That access to higher education should be granted, said Education Secretary Arne Duncan. “They have done everything they’ve been asked for in school,” Duncan said.

The Defense bill on Tuesday failed to get the 60 votes needed to proceed. Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana recently criticized the DREAM Act on the Senate floor, saying that it will take college resources away from those who are already American citizens. “Amnesty and economic incentives only exacerbate the problem of illegal immigration” Vitter said. “While this bill is disguised as an educational initiative, it is simply another measure that offers a path to citizenship for illegals in this country and allows in-state college tuition for illegal immigrant students.”

COMMENTARY: Dr. Dorsey Should Be Fired!!! Are You Listening Governor?
