Melancon launches first TV ad of U.S. Senate race (All D.C. Democrat Spin) by Jan Moller - Times-Picayune (excerpt)
The televised ad wars in Louisiana's U.S. Senate race is officially under way, as Democrat Charlie Melancon today unveiled a commercial aimed at introducing himself to voters and countering claims by his likely GOP opponent in the fall, Sen. David Vitter. The 30-second commercial features Melancon in a living-room setting, looking at the camera as he says Vitter "hasn't been honest with Louisiana. And I don't expect anything different when he starts talking about my record." In the ad, Melancon describes himself as a "pro-life, pro-gun Louisiana Democrat" who is willing to work with anyone for the state's betterment. Vitter has countered by tying Melancon to President Barack Obama and the Democratic leaders in the House and Senate, who are unpopular in a state that is considerably more conservative than the country as a whole.
COMMENTARY: Melancon is using his best Washington D.C. Democrat spin to try and defend his abysmal pro-abortion record and his record of being soft on gun rights. Clearly, when you vote with Obama 84% of the time and Nancy Pelosi 93% of the time – you need all the DC spin you can get to hide from voters in Louisiana.
Melancon’s rhetoric won’t fool Louisianians. The facts are: Melancon has a 42% rating from National Right To Life compared to Senator Vitter’s 100% rating. And, Gun Owners of America gave Charlie a C, the lowest rating of our Louisiana House delegation, compared to Senator Vitter’s A+ rating. Southern Media’s new poll shows Vitter with a healthy 19 point lead over Melancon.
