Judge Who Turned Over Records Quits

NEW ORLEANS -- A New Orleans city judge who turned over her office's payroll records to federal investigators has resigned.

First elected in 1998, Sonja Spears has been living part time in Massachusetts, where her children attend school. The Times-Picayune reported that Spears and her husband own a $1.3 million house in a Boston suburb. Spears' spokeswoman, Tanzie Jones, wouldn't comment about the resignation. It was submitted Tuesday and effective immediately.

Last spring, Jones said that the judge's children attend school in Massachusetts and that Spears has had specialized medical treatment in Massachusetts. In May, prosecutors subpoenaed documents showing how many days Spears worked, along with security video and payroll and expense records.
