Vitter Far Surpasses Melancon In Race For Campaign Money

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., continues to significantly out raise Democratic Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, in the race for campaign contributions. During the most recent three-month cycle, ending June 30, Vitter raised $1 million, leaving him with about $5.5 million in the bank. Melancon raised about $406,000 in the same period, leaving him with $2.35 million in his campaign treasury. Still, the Melancon campaign tried to paint the best picture for their candidate, pointing out that he still has more cash on hand than other Democratic Senate challengers. Other candidates in the Aug. 28 Louisiana primary, including Vitter's new GOP primary opponent Chet Traylor, have yet to release fundraising reports.
