State Sen. Butch Gautreaux (Democrat) running for lieutenant governor

BATON ROUGE -- A Democratic state senator from Morgan City said today that he will join the all-Republican field vying to become Louisiana's next lieutenant governor. Sen. Butch Gautreaux, D-Morgan City, said he plans to sign the qualifying papers at the Secretary of State's office around 3:30 p.m. today. The three-day signup period for federal, state and local races that will be on the fall ballot ends at 5:00. "I'm going to be your next lieutenant governor," Gautreaux said in a brief telephone interview. When his candidacy becomes official, Gautreaux will join a special election field that includes Secretary of State Jay Dardenne, country singer Sammy Kershaw and state GOP Chairman Roger Villere. The state's No. 2 elected position, which is being filled on an interim basis by Scott Angelle, opened up this spring when Mitch Landrieu resigned to become mayor of New Orleans.Gautreaux has served in the Senate since 2000 and cannot run again because of term limits.
