Authorities keep close eye on sex offenders

Every six months since December 1998, Donald Reed registered as a convicted sex offender with Caddo sheriff's office, as required by law. The problem is he didn't live at his residence of record in the 1400 block of Clanton Street when deputies made a routine check recently. "The people at the house said he'd moved, and they gave us a general idea of where he was," said Rick Farris, with the sheriff's office. "We tracked him down and arrested him for not updating his residency."

Reed, 47, is among the 550 registered sex offenders in Caddo Parish, and the roughly 160 in Bossier Parish, who keep deputies busy making sure they're in compliance. State law prohibits anyone convicted of a sex crime from living within 1,000 feet of schools and day cares, and they must notify authorities anytime they move and change jobs.

They also are required to register with authorities every three months to a year, depending on the seriousness of their crime.
