Story Archives: Attorney's letter to councilman: (Called Klansman)- Issue retraction or I'll sue

Attorney's letter to councilman: (Called Klansman)- Issue retraction or I'll sue
by Karina Donica - The Town Talk (excerpt)

Alexandria attorney Gregory Aymond is demanding a retraction from City Councilman Louis Marshall for public remarks he made during the most recent City Council meeting.

In a letter to Marshall dated Aug. 16, Aymond said he wants a public retraction made at the next televised City Council meeting or sent to him by letter for a remark Marshall made that Aymond alleges was slanderous.

The comments transpired during a heated discussion Tuesday between City Attorney Charles “Chuck” Johnson and Marshall regarding a new ordinance allowing the council to contract with two attorneys despite concerns of a potential violation of the City Charter.

Marshall and other members of the council who voted in favor of the ordinance have maintained they have not received proper representation from Johnson on several issues.

One of those issues followed Aymond’s complaint filed with the District Attorney’s Office that alleged a secret meeting had been held to decide not to rebroadcast a June 12 special meeting on government access Channel 4. Any secret meeting of the council would have violated the Louisiana Open Meetings Law.

“This council was sued by a klansman, and I have to yet hear from you,” a visibly upset Marshall told Johnson during the televised meeting.

Aymond, who has acknowledged a former affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan, said Marshall needs to retract the statement or Aymond will sue for slander.
