EDITORIAL: A rare voice of reason is speaking

(L)awmakers and attorneys write in run-on sentences for specific reasons, not all of which are beneficial. That point stands on its own merits, but we make it today for a different reason: Righting Louisiana's fiscal ship -- the point of the Streamlining Commission -- will take clarity and discipline. References to both belong in the report and its 238 recommendations. They aren't included, so we are left with hope.

The good news is that a voice of clarity and discipline has been speaking. It is the voice of state Treasurer John Kennedy, a member of the commission and an authority on state finances. Kennedy has presented smart initiatives based on common sense, and we wish his commission colleagues had been more receptive to more of them.

Still, Kennedy's participation has helped to steer the discussion, and that is reflected in the report. And the process itself has provided another benefit: the chance for many more people to hear this rare voice of reason. That, too, is important for Louisiana.
