Longtime Winnfield Mayor Deano Thornton stepped down from office Monday, city officials said. The city council has until Nov. 19 to name a new mayor and if one isn't named by then, the governor will appoint a mayor until the next election.
Thornton -- who has 12 years of service with the city -- said he stepped down because of increased obligations with his work with Winn Community Health Center.
In March, he accepted a job with the non-profit group that opened up the federally-qualified health clinic in the community. When he accepted the job, Thornton announced that he wouldn't be seeking re-election. He said he thought he could continue his term, but the organization plans to announce a capital project at the clinic soon and the majority of the work will fall on Thornton's shoulders.
