The federal government’s much-touted “cash for clunkers” program, which provided cash incentives for consumers to trade in their cars for more fuel-efficient models, has been promoted as a big step in advancing America’s fuel conservation.
Oddly enough, author David Owen says having more fuel-efficient cars on the road actually might increase fuel consumption.
Owen’s book, “Green Metropolis,” takes a critical look at some of the underlying assumptions of the environmental movement, including the promise of fuel efficiency in saving fuel and protecting the environment.
