The good news about education in Louisiana: The reforms of a decade and more ago are starting to work.
The bad news: The reason we know they’re working is that the critics of reform are mobilizing against them. For the first time since key elements of reform of elementary and secondary education were put into place in 1998, the opposition has become more than the tiresome foot-dragging of interested parties on education committees or in other forums. Instead, there are now outright attacks on basic reform principles.
The critics of reform haven’t won all the battles, but they’ve won enough — particularly in this year’s session of the Legislature — to put reformers on the defensive.
