Richwood Mayor Steve Hunter will face a recall election Oct. 17 after the state's attorney general certified enough Richwood voters had signed a petition to force an election.
Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive proclamation Wednesday ordering the election following certification. According to Jindal's proclamation, 444 people signed the petition, but only 373 of those names belonged to qualified voters in Richwood. According to the Secretary of State's Office, there were 1,068 qualified voters in Richwood at the time the recall was filed.
To force a recall election, state law requires at least 33 1/3 percent of qualified voters in a voting area to sign a recall petition. The 373 qualified voters signing the petition in Richwood constituted just under 35 percent of qualified voters, which passed the threshold.
