Stanford, 4 others indicted in Texas

Houston financier Robert Allen Stanford bilked billions from refinery workers in Baton Rouge and other investors across the globe through bribes and lies, federal officials alleged in an indictment Friday.

Stanford, 59, three former employees, and an Antiguan banking regulator were charged in a federal indictment with conspiracy to commit more than $7 billion in mail, wire and securities fraud, Justice Department officials in Washington, D.C., announced. That indictment was unsealed in Houston.

A sixth Stanford associate was charged with the same offenses in a separate document known as a criminal information. Such action usually means the defendant will plead guilty. And a seventh person, a former Stanford employee, was indicted in Florida for allegedly shredding several 95-gallon bins of Stanford documents that were sought by federal investigators.
