The House tussled Thursday over advancing tax breaks for crawfish bait, businesses, hybrid vehicles, the entertainment industry and others. The number of tax cuts clearing the House set the stage for wrangling with the Jindal administration over which ones should be included in the budget.
Gov. Bobby Jindal is backing a half-dozen tax breaks, far less relief than some lawmakers want to grant.
House Speaker Pro Tem Karen Peterson, D-New Orleans, questioned whether the state can afford the additional measures, which reduce state revenue. “A million dollars here is another million dollars there … We don’t have the money,” she said.
