EDITORIAL: Happy 100, Mr. Williams (Tribute To LSU Professor T. Harry Williams)

Long before LSU began to think of itself as a flagship institution, T. Harry Williams helped put the university on the national map. Williams, an LSU professor of history, gained fame across the nation when his biography of the late Louisiana Gov. Huey Long won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

Williams was also a consummate Civil War historian, penning a seminal book about the Union prosecution of the war, “Lincoln and His Generals.” Williams, who arrived at LSU in 1941 and died in 1979, was known around campus as a great teacher, too.

All of this comes to mind with this month’s observance of the centennial of Williams’ birth. “Observance” is perhaps too grand a word to describe the modest recognition of this anniversary. Alas, there was no flourish of trumpets at LSU to mark Williams’ centennial, no formal ceremony. Even so, Williams’ legacy to LSU — and to all of Louisiana — shouldn’t be forgotten.
