Story Archives: NAACP seeks recall of tax assessor

NAACP seeks recall of tax assessor
by Vickie Welborn - Shreveport Times (excerpt)

HOMER — A recall petition to remove Claiborne Parish Tax Assessor Bob Robinson from office is being filed this week with the secretary of state's office by the Claiborne Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. President Willie Young, who's also a Homer minister and Claiborne police juror, cited Robinson's termination of long-time employee Mae "Kitty" Williams, of Haynesville, as a primary factor in the recall.

Williams, the only black employee in the small office, was fired by Robinson on Dec. 31, a day before he officially took office, Young said. Williams and another employee, Kelly Waller, sought the tax assessor's title during an October 2007 election to replace retiring Tax Assessor Clyde C. Hightower. Williams and Robinson landed in a runoff, with Robinson being the ultimate victor. Waller is still employed with the tax assessor's office.

"It's not illegal to fire people, but there is a way to do it," Young said. "I can't question his integrity. " What we are going to do is just recall him."

News of the plans caught Robinson off guard Monday. He said he had not heard of the recall, nor had Young discussed any concerns with him.
