Story Archives: New Poll: Many Say Change or They'll Leave

New Poll: Many Say Change or They'll Leave
by ALLEN M. JOHNSON JR. - Advocate (excerpt)

NEW ORLEANS — More than one out of every three New Orleans voters say they may have to leave the city unless it can change direction, according to a new poll released Thursday.

The joint survey of Tulane University and Democracy Now, a nonprofit research firm co-owned by national political consultant James Carville, quizzed 1,008 likely voters in the New Orleans mayor’s race in 2010. The survey, conducted April 5-14, sampled local opinions on a wide range of political issues.

Carville, who has run campaigns in 18 countries, including Bill Clinton’s victorious presidential race in 1992, said New Orleans voters are highly attuned to current events. “The level of engagement reminds me of Israel — everybody knows what everybody else is doing,” he said.

COMMENTARY: An interesting fact from the poll (not mentioned in the news coverage) was Bobby Jindal's positive to negative rating in the poll was 34%-46%. Nagin's was 26%-56%. The New Orleans electorate is just over 50% black.
