Story Archives: Al Sharpton to lead Homer march

Al Sharpton to lead Homer march
by Vickie Welborn - Shreveport Times (excerpt)

HOMER — Civil rights activist Al Sharpton will lead a march Friday in Homer to bring attention to the continued investigation into the Feb. 20 officer-involved shooting death of an elderly Homer man.

Sharpton, founder of the National Action Network, will meet with Claiborne Parish clergy and community leaders at 4:30 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He then will lead a march that will take participants down Martin Luther King Drive to Hill Street and then disbanding at Mayfield Park, where Sharpton will speak.

On Saturday, Sharpton will preach at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church at 3 p.m.

The town has been mired in controversy since the death of Bernard Monroe Sr. Monroe, 73, was shot multiple times after two Homer police officers pursued Monroe's son into the yard and tased him.

Homer police allege Monroe was armed. Witnesses to the shooting say he was not.

State police are leading an investigation into the shooting. There's still no word on when it will be completed. But once it is, it will be up to District Attorney Jonathan Stewart to decide where to go from there.
